Myopia Management in Waterloo: Slow Down Nearsightedness

Waterloo West Optometry is skilled in managing and slowing the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children. Our personalized treatment plans help protect your child’s vision from long-term risks.

Moderate to high myopia can significantly increase a person's risk of developing sight-threatening eye diseases later in life. As the level of myopia increases, so does the risk of eye disease.

What is Myopia?

Myopia makes distant objects look blurry while nearby objects stay clear. It happens when the eye grows too long, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of on it. Myopia can get worse during childhood, so early treatment is important.

Levels of Myopia:

Mild Myopia: -0.25 to -3.00 D

Moderate Myopia: -3.00 to -6.00 D

High Myopia: More than -6.00 D

Children with high myopia face an increased risk of developing severe eye conditions, including retinal detachment, cataracts, and glaucoma, later in life.

Myopia Symptoms: What to Look For

Watch for signs that your child may experience myopia. These symptoms can affect your child’s ability to see clearly and may impact their school performance:

  • Blurry vision when looking at distant objects
  • Squinting or tilting the head to see better
  • Headaches caused by eye strain
  • Difficulty seeing the board in school
Holding books or screens too close to the face

If your child shows any of these symptoms, schedule an eye exam with us to explore myopia treatment options.
